Can Chiropractic Help With Allergies?
Allergies can really hamper one’s ability to enjoy the outdoors. As spring rolls into Colorado, the outdoor
activities ramp up into full gear – and sitting on the sidelines because of allergies is no fun for anybody.
Most of these allergens are airborne fungal spores that cause all types of reactions, and these get
amplified as we transition from winter to spring.
Most of these reactions are caused by the inflammation in our breathing airways, which can cause
everything from sneezing to difficulty breathing and shortness of breath. Those with these types of
sensitivities might be able to find some short-term relief with things like antihistamines, but getting
more complete relief might be able to be found by visiting your chiropractor.
What Causes Seasonal Allergies?
Allergic reactions are caused when we come into contact with the allergens. The problem with seasonal
allergies is that it’s sometimes not possible to avoid contact with the allergens that cause you problems.
Pollen has a habit of being everywhere. Depending on the severity of your allergy, this could cause
sneezing, irritation or rashes on the skin, runny noses or watery eyes.
Once your body detects these allergens, your immune system begins to generate histamines – which
help to rid your body of something that’s bothering it. Histamines are what begin to rid your body of
those allergens, but sometimes your system can overreact. That overreaction can be what is giving you
those allergy symptoms. Medication can be prescribed or taken over the counter to help regulate the
production of histamines, but these treatments aren’t guaranteed to work the same way for all patients.
How Can a Chiropractor Help?
Chiropractic care is focused on your nervous system, which runs the show for your immune system. The
impact of seasonal allergies can be lessened through a spinal adjustment, as it opens up the lines of
communication within your nervous system to get your immune system working optimally. Spinal
adjustments help to return your body to its proper balance. Any misalignment or spinal subluxation
affects your nervous system, which can have a domino effect on the communications to other systems
within your body.
If your spine is out of alignment, it can put pressure on your nervous system or block important signals
from getting to the proper place. That puts your whole nervous system under stress, which can impact
multiple other systems throughout your body. If your brain isn’t getting the proper messages from your
immune system, it could knock the production of those histamines out of whack.
Getting proper spinal alignment can help with more than allergies, but making sure your immune system
is performing optimally is a great place to start. For more information on how chiropractic care can help
