Curvy Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a serious spinal condition that happens most often in adolescents. It’s a sideways curvature of the spine that most commonly occurs in during growth spurts that happen around the onset of puberty, but a definitive cause for the condition is unknown. There are varying degrees of seriousness for this condition, and some can get quite painful. However, chiropractic care can provide non-invasive treatment to get things back on track.
Even mild instances of scoliosis can be quite painful, and interfere with daily tasks. Severe cases wound up getting treated through surgery, but the bulk of scoliosis patients need alternatives to deal with the pain and discomfort. Because of the curvature caused in the spine from this condition, the vertebrae press against each other, compressing the spinal discs to one side. Along with the discomfort of the vertebrae rubbing against each other, it can also pinch nerves and strain your joints.
This pain isn’t isolated in the spinal column. It also affects all of the tendons and muscles surrounding the area. Because this is not a natural position for your spine, it can lead to muscle spasms and lingering back pain. This curvature can worsen without treatment. While chiropractors cannot simply straighten your spine, they can alleviate some of the pressure, prevent the curvature from worsening, and improve your overall well-being with the condition.
Chiropractors focus on the nervous system, and how your entire body works together as a whole. Because your spine is the main thoroughfare for your body’s communication through the nervous system, an unnatural curvature can affect a multitude of bodily systems and functions. The non-invasive nature of chiropractic care can help improve your range of motion while alleviating some of the pain.
Mild curvature in the spine can develop without being noticed by you or your child. But there are some symptoms and warning signs that can be seen. Along with the abnormal curvature, the spine will often twist, as well. Some signs to look for are ribs or muscles sticking out on one side, uneven shoulders or waist, one hip higher than the other, or one shoulder blade jutting out more than the other.
This condition isn’t exclusive to growing children. It can happen in adults, as well. Adult scoliosis can develop through a number of causes, such as trauma, or aging, or other conditions with the spine. Adults can experience lower back pain or leg pain, as a result of pinched nerves. Like children with this condition, there are alternatives to treat scoliosis without surgery. Exercise can help reduce pain by strengthening muscles, which also helps improve support of the spine. Proper nutrition can also play a large role in helping with symptoms and the root causes.
Again, the biggest treatment chiropractors can provide for patients with scoliosis is to reduce the pressure on the nervous system. For more information about scoliosis and how chiropractors can help, contact Dr. Morgan Sheridan at Foundation Chiropractic today.
