Busting common myths about chiropractors and kids
Visiting the chiropractor is a common pain relief avenue for countless people. However, there is a stigma against performing chiropractic care on children. There are plenty of opinions out there on doctors of chiropractic care, and even more on pediatric chiropractic care.
One of the common beliefs is that there is no need for performing chiropractic care on children. However, even newborns can have developmental concerns that may require this type of care and attention to the child’s nervous system.
There are certain secondary conditions in newborns that can be immediately linked to primary conditions with the nervous system. Among those are colic, difficulty breastfeeding, ear infections, etc. It’s important to note that the pediatric chiropractor isn’t trying to cure these ailments, but focus on priming the nervous system to alleviate the problem and get moving toward a cure.
Even when people believe that there could be some value in what a pediatric chiropractor can offer, some still believe that chiropractic techniques are too severe for children. The reality is that the method a pediatric chiropractor takes with adjusting children is much different than with adults.
There is no need to worry about excessive pressure being applied, as the techniques are different with children and infants than adults. The training for pediatric chiropractors is extensive because the same techniques cannot be applied to children that are applied to adults. The focus is preventative and proactive, working more to move the child’s spine into a position where it can reset on its own.
Another common misconception is that pediatric chiropractic is relatively new. Part of that stems from the simple fact that it is out of people’s realm of concern – until they have children. In reality, pediatric chiropractors have been practicing regularly for over a century, and doctors from numerous backgrounds have been recording the relevance of child spinal care for more than a century.
